There are numerous ways you can enjoy your time in Podstrana, which is why we have compiled a list of several things you can visit during your stay at Villa Unique 9.

CITIES AND TOWNS

The story of Split spans 17 centuries, beginning when the Roman Emperor Diocletian chose this peninsula near the great Roman city of Salona to erect a palace where he could peacefully spend the remaining years of his life. Over the span of 1700 years, the Palace slowly grew into a city, which now attracts tourists with its rich tradition, glorious history and the beauty of its natural and cultural heritage.

Diocletian’s Palace and the entire historical centre of Split have been a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1979, not only because the Palace itself is remarkably well-preserved, but also because the Palace and its city (or the city and its Palace, however you prefer) are still vibrant and full of life. In this structure you can still see and experience all the historical layers all the way from ancient Rome and the Middle Ages to today. While taking a walk through this historical city you can travel back in time and observe the superb examples of ancient architecture such as the Peristyle, small medieval Romanesque churches and Gothic palaces, Renaissance portals of noble houses, Baroque façades, all the way to modern architecture which is remarkably well-integrated into this rich heritage.

These are some of the things you should visit while in Split::

DIOCLETIAN’S PALACE, DIOCLETIAN’S CELLARS, THE TEMPLE OF JUPITER, THE PEOPLE’S SQUARE (PJACA), THE PERISTYLE, PROKURATIVE (THE REPUBLIC SQUARE), CATHEDRAL OF SAINT DOMNIUS, THE STATUE OF GREGORY OF NIN, ĐARDIN, THE VESTIBULE, THE ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM…

You can find more details and information on the Split Tourist Board website.

The island is probably named after the deer – brentos, a cult animal of the Illyrian tribes who inhabited the island. The Greeks called it Elaphusa and Bretanide after the word elaphos, meaning deer. Findings in the Kopačina cave show that there were deer on Brač in prehistoric times. Roman historian Polybius called it Bretia, Pliny the Elder called it Brattia and in the Antonine Itinerary from the 4th century it is referred to as Bractia.

The Golden Cape, Vidova Gora, Blaca Hermitage, deep bays, olive groves, vineyards, pine forests and the crystal clear sea are just some of the images numerous visitors take away from the island of Brač.

Cynics will remark that life is simple, but people are complicated. However, even in the busiest tourist seasons, the simplicity of living is what makes Vis radically different from other tourist destinations. Simplicity is the essence of this island, created on a human scale, which most visitors come to see in its entirety. In other words, they do not come just to see its protruding parts, Vis and Komiža, but also for the many bays and the interior of the island with its breathtakingly lush nature.

Six kilometres north of Split, in today’s Solin, lie the remains of the ancient city of Salona, capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Its favourable geographic position at the centre of the eastern Adriatic coast and at the bottom of the well-protected Kaštela Gulf, along the delta of the river Salon (now called Jadro) and good road connections with the interior through the Klis pass contributed to the rapid and smooth development of the city.

Thus, in the atmosphere of celebrating the third century of its existence, the Alka Knights Society and the museum holdings of old Alka uniforms and equipment found a proper home under the roof of this intriguingly decorated museum.
